President Trump is doing something absolutely extraordinary with his salary. On Thursday Health and Human Services Secretary Eric Hargan announced that President Trump is donating his third-quarter salary to a public awareness campaign on the dangers of opioid addiction.
“‘At HHS, our goal is to create healthier lives, stronger communities and a safer country, and we’re glad to have a president who recognizes that the opioid crisis is a huge threat to all three of these goals,’ Hargan said.”
Trump declared that the opioid epidemic is one of the “worst drug crisis in American history.”
“‘As Americans, we cannot allow this to continue,’ Trump said. ‘It is time to liberate our communities from the scourge of drug addiction. We can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic. We can do it.'”
A public health emergency is just one step below a national state of emergency. Trump has declared that the opioid epidemic is no joke. A national state of emergency has access to the federal Disaster Relief Fund. However, the administration has not yet declared how much money they will be asking for from Congress.
This isn’t the first time that Trump has used his salary for good. In July, Trump donated his first salary of $78,333 toward the restoration of a historical battlefield. He also donated his second-quarter salary which was a whopping $100,000, to the US Department of Education. This was used to help fund a camp that focused on teaching students about science, technology, engineering, and math.
