In Europe for this week’s NATO summit, President Donald Trump took the opportunity of a photo-op to give his thoughts on recent actions by American allies, NATO in general, and Germany specifically in a brutally honest rant.
President Trump tweeted a video of his rant against NATO and Germany, in particular, very early Wednesday morning.

“In many countries, they owe us a tremendous amount of money from many years back where they’re delinquent, as far as I’m concerned, because the United States has had to pay for them,” he said. “So if you go back 10 or 20 years, you just add it all up, it’s massive amounts of money is owed, the United States has paid, and stepped up like nobody.”
“Germany is totally controlled by Russia,” he stated.
The President emphasized this as an ongoing issue. “This has gone on for decades, by the way. For many presidents,” he said. “But no other president brought it up like I bring it up.”
In the midst of his long rant, Trump singled out Germany for their energy deals with Russia, repeating several times that the nation is beholden to Russia and implied that they are weakening their defense against Putin while also asking the United States to pay for Germany’s defense.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg responded to Trump’s accusations with praise for Trump, crediting the president’s “leadership” in eliciting more money for NATO from EU nations.
